Brigham Young All-American Whittni Orton discusses with DyeStat editor Erik Boal her memorable winter season, which saw the junior achieve indoor program records in the distance medley relay, mile, 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Orton produced the fastest 3,000 time on an oversized track in NCAA history Feb. 14 when she ran 8:49.63 at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Washington and anchored the quickest DMR ever by a collegiate quartet on an oversized track Feb. 1 when BYU clocked 10:53.95 at the same venue in Seattle. Orton revisits the progress she made during a 10-week stretch, in which she achieved three top-15 all-time collegiate indoor performances, in addition to the top-10 effort in the DMR. Orton reflects on her development since arriving at BYU in 2016 after capturing four state cross country titles and nine state track championships in the Utah 1A classification competing at Panguitch High. Orton also talks about taking on a leadership role in the program in the 2020-21 school year, looking to lead BYU to another podium finish at the Division 1 cross country nationals after she placed seventh individually and the Cougars took second as a team in November in Terre Haute, Ind.
